South of Scotland Football on 19th December, 2009.
The weather was the only winner in South football circles last weekend with all scheduled matches being cancelled due to frozen pitches. This now means that there will be no South football played until Saturday, 9th January, 2010, when play resumes following the festive break. There will of course be action off the park and this has already started with Newton Stewart signing twenty two year old mid-fielder Stuart Maxwell from St Cuthbert Wanderers. It was hoped to field the new player against Stranraer last Saturday but with the game postponed Maxwell will make his debut on the 9th January in the re-arranged League Cup Semi Final against Stranraer at Stair Park.
Rab Harkness of Dalbeattie Star scored the winning goal for Dalbeattie Star against Threave Rovers last Wednesday night to put his side through to the last eight of the SFA Challenge Cup (South) and as he doesn’t score many goals be felt he didn’t get the credit he deserved for what has now been described as a superb strike. It has since been confirmed that the player who has been with Star for ten seasons beat three men with some deft touches before blasting the ball goalwards where the precision and speed of the shot deceived keeper Vinnie Parker for a goal worthy of winning any match. So well done Rab Harkness.
Before signing off for the festive period the author of this column wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Sporting New Year and looks forward to keeping you in touch with South football when play resumes in two weeks time. |
